2019 Mold & Toxin Issues

Jan 04, 2020

Wet and cooler growing conditions have created more concerns for a higher than usual amount of mold and yeast counts, which lead to toxins.  Late harvest has allowed more growth of molds that may have been growing in the field.
In corn grain the most prevalent toxin is vomitoxin with some zearalonone .
Corn and corn by-products are a main source of feed for our livestock and all sources of corn can carry an amount of vomitoxin, which can be detrimental to your herd.  Corn silage, dry corn grain, high moisture corn, and corn distillers grains are examples of what we usually are concerned with due to the total amounts being fed.
Zeralonone and T2 toxins have shown some issues in dairy herds in certain areas.  Most of the time breeding problems will occur especially if zeralanone is present.
Wild yeast is also quite prevalent this year and most of the issues we see here are in corn silage. As we begin to feed out, we will continue to see these numbers increase.  When the silage is exposed to oxygen, yeast will grow exponentially and this will cause heating and an opportunity for more mold spores to grow.
As we move into a new feeding season we must be aware of the challenges that could exist. Continue to work closely with your Premier nutritionist to determine the right course of action to help reduce the effects of mold and toxins on your livestock operation.
